Influential factors for stress and self esteem of dental hygiene students

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of stress, self-esteem, and social support in dental hygiene students.
Methods: The data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 518 students in three colleges in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, and Jeollabuk-do. Korea. The questionnaire consisted of stress, self-esteem and social support. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson`s correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.
Results: The mean(¡¾SD) scores of stress, self-esteem and social support were 3.13(0.52), 3.31(0.55), and 3.66(0.48), respectively. A significantly negative correlations was shown in self-esteem(r=-0.360, p¡´0.001) as well as social support(r=-0.138, p¡´0.05) in relation to stress.
Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and apply nursing intervention to promote self-esteem, social support, and to reduce stress in dental hygiene students.
